With only three copies in the tournament Food Chain decks were a rare archetype at the MagicCardMarket Series Milan 2017. It might not be a deck everybody first thinks about when the Legacy format is mentioned but don’t get fooled by just looking numbers and familiarity. Food Chain decks are grindy BUG decks with the potential of a (quick) combo kill with a combination of Food Chain, Misthollow Griffin, and Walking Ballista.
During the rounds I spoke to Marius Hausmann who is currently 4-1 with his Food Chain deck. With a loss against Infect because in game 1 he couldn’t stop his opponent from killing him in turn two. In game 2 Hausmann hadn’t have enough removal for four creatures from the Infect player.
Since Miracles is a top tier deck in Legacy Hausmann feels even more comfortable with his deck choice. Hausmann liked the strong late game and the ability of grinding other decks out his deck is capable of thanks to cards like Misthollow Griffin, Baleful Strix, and Leovold, Emissary of Trest. By the way, you can also exile Misthollow Griffin to Force of Will for value! He preferred BUG Food Chain over other BUG midrange variants because when Food Chain falls behind during a game, the deck can turn around the game easier than other BUG decks. Hausmann’s most favorite card from the deck is Manipulate Fate. It functions as a tutor for Misthollow Griffin and draws you a card- good value!Misthollow Griffin, however, functions as a strong beater which is not easily stopped and is 1/3 of the combo kill.
When I asked Hausmann about his worst matchups he quickly replied that Storm and Sneak& Show are bad matchups for Food Chain. Therefore he packed Mindbreak Trap and Surgical Extraction and Thoughtseize in the sideboard. He pointed out that most of the time he hardcast Mindbreak Trap since four mana not that difficult to get.
In one situation his opponent cast Show and Tell using Boseiju, Who Shelters All but because the trap didn’t countered but exiled spells, it was no problem for Hausmann to stop his opponents combo.
