In keeping with long-standing tradition, we first take a look back at what happened before … Six weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Milan for the first stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 134 Legacy lovers.

Deck of the Tournament

The biggest surprise to come out of the Legacy tournament with regards to decks concerned Miracles. Miracles was widely considered to be the absolute top dog of the format, even by many of the Top 8 players. But when the smoke of the Swiss rounds had cleared and the final eight gathered for the playoffs, Miracles was nowhere to be found.

Instead, the Top 8 featured eight different archetypes, including an interesting all-colorless Eldrazi Ramp and the Food Chain of eventual champion Marius Hausmann!

Match of the Tournament

Rodrigo Togores vs. Ivan Cane

The Top 8 included a number of interesting matches, for example the quarterfinal between Rodrigo Togores and Ivan Cane. Here, Cane demonstrated the power of his ramp strategy and particular his Chalice of the Void/Trinisphere package in vanquishing Togores's Storm deck.

Marius Hausmann vs. Martin Kral

But the final between Marius Hausmann and Martin Kral was one for the history books. First Hausmann assembled his own combo of Food Chain/Eternal Scourge and ended things with the largest Walking Ballista in recent memory. Then Kral was able to Show and Tell into Omniscience into Griselbrand and later even cast Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. However Hausmann still came out on top, in no small part thanks to Leovold, Emissary of Trest and Baleful Strix.

Notable Finishes

A Grand Prix champion in Legacy and a champion of several independent Vintage tournaments, Rodrigo Togores was no stranger to doing well at the MKM Series. He had made the Top 8 of MKM Series events in Modern, Vintage, and Legacy four times before, winning three! In Milan he was back with his trusted Storm deck for yet another quarterfinals appearance, although this was as far as he got.

Meanwhile Marius Hausmann had only had two MKM Series Top 8s to his name going into the weekend, curiously both in Modern despite being an expert on Legacy, not Modern. Now it was time for his first Legacy Top 8, and he made it count. With three 2-0 victories, Hausmann put himself at the very top of the Food Chain and became the undisputable Legacy champion of MKM Series Milan 2017.

Congratulations to Legacy champion Marius Hausmann!
