In keeping with long-standing tradition, we first take a look back at what happened before … Six weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Milan for the first stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 117 masters of Modern.

Deck of the Tournament

It was tempting to give this honor to Angelo Cadei's Top 8 deck who succesfully ported the combo of Saheeli Rai and Felidar Guardian to Modern. But Domenico Di Noia outdid everyone when he put the affinity mechanic back into Affinity, and not with the odd Thoughtcast or two either. No, his deck featured a full four copies of both Frogmite and Myr Enforcer! Of course, then Di Noia also outdid everyone by winning the whole thing.

Match of the Tournament

Affinity was only played by ten of the 117 Modern competitors. Yet two of them ended up in the final, although, to be fair, Domenico Di Noia's version was nothing like the stock list which Riccardo Cecolin piloted. In any case, their match was an entertaining affair going to three games. It wasn't even clear whether Di Noia's unusual card choices gave him an advantage or put him at a disadvantage here—his Contested War Zone mostly switched sides for instance—but Di Noia definitely had the better shot at an explosive opening.

Notable Finishes

Angelo Cadei had previously reached the Modern final at MKM Series Madrid 2015 and had hoisted the Legacy winner's trophy at MKM Series Prague 2016. In Milan he was eliminated in the quarterfinals, proving that third time's not always the charm. Another great finish nevertheless!
