In keeping with long-standing tradition, we first take a look back at what happened before … Six weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Milan for the first stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 21 stars of Standard.

Deck of the Tournament

As had become the norm in the weeks leading up to the tournament, Standard was overrun by Mardu and Saheeli Rai/Felidar Guardian. Seven of the Top 8 spots were taken by these two decks, leaving room for but one rogue design. Such was played by Andrea Dorigo who came equipped with Esper Control, saw his chance, and conquered the tournament!

Match of the Tournament

Shockingly, Dorigo had avoided playing an actual match against Mardu until the semifinals, where he met Mardu Ballista player Krister Haas. Theirs ended up being the most entertaining match of the Top 8, although it wasn't because of great game play.

Instead, an unreal series of events made it quite unncessary for Dorigo to win a real match against Mardu once again. Or ever. With one game decided on plain bad luck and a second decided by a strategic sideboarding error, Haas proved he was well capable of losing all by himself, with only minimal assistance from Dorigo.

Notable Finishes

The Top 8 didn't feature any players famous for previous success at the MKM Series or elsewhere. In fact, the most remarkable finish was Andrea Dorigo's and it was notable precisely because it was his first; because Dorigo had only begun playing Magic two months earlier with the release of Aether Revolt.

Congratulations to Andrea Dorigo, the newbie champion of Standard at MKM Series Milan 2017!
