In keeping with long-standing tradition, we first take a look back at what happened before … Six weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Milan for the first stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 27 veterans of Vintage.

Deck of the Tournament

Andrea Mengucci brought the sweetest deck to the Top 8, a new spin on Standard's Saheeli Rai combo, but with the powerful tools of Vintage. The deck used Oath of Druids to put multiple copies of Saheeli Rai into the graveyard as well as Sun Titan onto the battlefield.

Sun Titan returned the planeswalker, the planeswalker copied the Titan, the copy replaced Saheeli Rai with another one from the graveyard, this fresh planeswalker copied the Titan again … and so on, until an army of hasty 6/6 tokens attacked for the win.

Match of the Tournament

Joan Mateo

The semifinal between Rüdiger Hesse's Eldrazi and Joan Mateo's Monastery Mentor was one hell of a ride, involving a couple of close calls and a few, let's say, missed calls. The first game ended when Mateo, on 6 life and tapped out, held back four Monk tokens for blockers and Hesse drew a second Reality Smasher.

The third game ended when Mateo, on 5 life and tapped out, held back five Monk tokens for blockers and Hesse drew a second Reality Smasher.

Notable Finishes

The Top 8 featured a mix of big names, repeat performers, and at least one player new to Vintage. For Rüdiger Hesse, this marked his first Vintage tournament ever, yet he already reached the final. Andrea Mengucci might be familiar to readers due to his two Top 8 finishes each on the Pro Tour and at the World Magic Cup, including a win in 2015. Joan Mateo made his fourth MKM Series Top 8 this weekend. And Luca Lovino returned after his quarterfinals appearance in Vintage at MKM Series Milan 2016. This time, he went all the way and became Vintage champion of MKM Series Milan 2017!
