On the eve of MKM Series Prague, it was time for us to once again take a step back and review what happened so far … Thirteen weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Frankfurt for the second stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 124 stars of Standard.

Deck of the Tournament

Although Amonkhet had only been released three days prior, the Top 8 already featured several decks making good use of cards from the latest set: Frederic Geiger was playing Channeler Initiate, Rhonas the Indomitable, and Glorybringer; Thorben Sieksmeyer combined Cathartic Reunion and Stitchwing Skaab with the new Drake Haven; Fabian Kennel brought a deck which prominently featured Bone Picker and Hazoret the Fervent. Many fell quickly in the playoffs, beaten by Mardu Vehicles, which was the most played deck in the tournament and put four of its pilots into the Top 8.

Arne Huschenbeth remained in control up to the final

But Arne Huschenbeth, who had nine different cards from Amonkhet in his Blue-Red Control made it all the way to the final!

Match of the Tournament

The final between Huschenbeth and eventual champion Malik Martin was a close affair going to three games. In the first game poor Huschenbeth drew the wrong answers, Harnessed Lightnings instead of Magma Sprays. In the third he almost managed to stabilize, clearing the board via Sweltering Suns and Magma Spray; he passed with one counterspell in hand and enough mana untapped. But Martin drew yet another Scrapheap Scrounger, which couldn't be stopped this way and crewed Heart of Kiran for a lethal attack.

Champion Malik Martin could rely on his ability to topdeck Scrapheap Scrounger when it counted the most

Notable Finishes

The most famous people to reach the playoffs clearly were Arne Huschenbeth and Valentin Mackl. Neither could boast any previous Top 8 at the MKM Series, but both had had tremendous success at the Grand Prix level, Huschenbeth with two Top 8s including a win and Mackl with a whopping six Top 8s including five fourth-place finishes …

The fourth was strong with Darth Mackl
