On the eve of MKM Series Hamburg, it was time for us to once again take a step back and review what happened so far … Just seven weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Prague for the third stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 30 veterans of Vintage.

Deck of the Tournament

Monastery Mentor may have walked away with the trophy once again. But the Top 8 also featured a pair of decks we hadn't really seen before: Martin Vsiansky made it to the quarterfinals by flashing Academy Rector onto the battlefield, while Stephane Roumanille brought the brand new Solemnity to the fray, skipping the upkeep on Mystic Remora and putting no counters on Dark Depths all the way to the semifinals!

Match of the Tournament

The final was a battle between the two top dogs of today's Vintage—Mishra's Workshops and Monastery Mentor—and it was every bit as exciting as the format.

Maciej Fidzinski with Shops versus Tom De Decker with Mentor

One game each went to the starting player, but not before Mentor magician Tom De Decker, going second, got a break in the first. His Force of Will and Engineered Explosives managed to keep all Spheres/Thorn of Amethyst off the table, allowing his Moxen, Ancestral Recall, Paradoxical Outcome, Treasure Cruise, and Gush to flow freely. The outcome wasn't paradoxical at all, as a combination of Monastery Mentor tokens and Tendrils of Agony secured victory for De Decker.

Notable Finishes

For most of Vintage's quarterfinalists this was their first Top 8 at the MKM Series. However, Johannes Heibach had previously reached the playoffs in Vintage at MKM Series Prague 2016, while Maciej Fidzinski had reached the quarterfinals in Legacy at MKM Series Prague 2015. This time, Fidzinski even came this close to his first trophy!
