On the eve of MKM Series Barcelona, it was time for us to once again take a step back and review what happened so far … Just seven weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Hamburg for the fourth and penultimate stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 386 masters of Modern.

Deck of the Tournament

Death's Shadow put three players into the Top 8, but none of them followed the usual Grixis script. Instead, Dennis Zens relied on the old-school Jund, while Karl Oskar Persson and Michel Kohn used the up-and-coming Esper version. Esper Shadow prevailed in all but one of the Top 8 matches and became our pick for deck of the tournament.

Match of the Tournament

The final was the first loss for Esper Shadow against another deck in the playoffs. Here, Jonas Nieke demonstrated once again that Affinity was a deck to be respected. Affinity had won three of the previous four Modern events at the MKM Series, its string of victories only broken by the previous show in Prague.

Jonas Nieke versus Karl Oskar Persson

Now it was back to form. Granted, the robots did encounter more than a few obstacles in Persson's Lingering Souls and barrage of spot removal, and swiftly lost the first game. But a little mana and color screw gave the second game to Nieke, and Bomat Courier plus Etched Champion sealed the deal in the third.

Notable Finishes

This was the third Top 8 at the MKM Series for Nicklas Krull, but his first in Modern, after two previous outings in Legacy. It also was the second Top 8 for Dennis Zens who was obviously destined for great things. He would return on the next day to hoist the winner's trophy in Legacy.
