With more stops and more events than ever this was going to be happy new year at the MKM Series, and we wasted no time to get going! We started into the new season right away on this, the very first weekend of 2018. For a fresh look at the state of Modern, we asked some of the more notable players in attendance what they considered to be the most overrated decks of today's Modern …

Dennis Zens, first among the MKMS Power 8: “Err … Storm.”

Julian Knab, second among the MKMS Power 8: “I've taken my longest break ever from competitive Magic after MKMS Barcelona, so take this with a grain of salt, but the power of Tron seems to be overrated. I'm saying this after seeing a ton of complaints about the deck on social media over the last week, with special focus on all the non-games it creates because of a perceived lack of player interaction. I do agree that Tron certainly is guilty of doing these things. However, I don't think the problem is players not respecting the deck enough when building their own decks. I honestly think having these non-games is just what you sign up for when playing Modern. Wizards have done an okay job with reducing non-games in Modern, but generally speaking, getting blown out really hard is just what you sign up for when playing this format. You either die a midrange deck, or play long enough to see yourself become a combo deck. ”

Rodrigo Togores, veteran of seven MKM Series Top 8s and two-time GP champion: “I think Grixis Death's Shadow and this new mono-blue Living End deck with As Foretold are the most overrated decks. People have adapted to beat Grixis and the Living End deck is just too rogue right now and has a lot of edge to get better. ”

Arne Huschenbeth, Standard champion of MKMS Hamburg 2017 and winner of GP Rimini 2016: “Humans and Jeskai Geist of Saint Traft.”

Justin Hayo, member of the MKMS Power 8: “Humans and Mono-Blue Living End.”

Thoralf “Toffel” Severin, veteran of two MKM Series Top 8s and two GP Top 8s: “Any kind of Jeskai.”

Tomas Mar, member of the MKMS Power 8: “I don't have that big insight into formats other than Legacy and Vintage, but I'd say the most overrated decks are midrange builds without blue like Abzan Control.”
