On the eve of MKM Series Hamburg, it was once again time for us to follow long-standing tradition and to review what happened last time at the MKM Series. Nine weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Rome for the second stop of the MKM Series 2018, including 57 stars of Standard …

Deck of the Tournament

Although the tournament was won by Mono-Red, Standard did have its share of surprises. Winding Constrictor surprised us by being the most popular deck choice. Blue-Black Midrange surprised us by putting a whopping half of its pilots into the Top 8.

Marco Santopadre was commanding the church forces

Most notably, Marco Santopadre (i.e. “the Holy Father”) went for the ultimate flavor win. Under his command, the Vampire conquistadors of the Church of Torrezon went undefeated through the Swiss guard, err, rounds.

Match of the Tournament

The final gave us the age-old battle between aggro and control and also the classic story of David versus Goliath. It was the first big finish for Kine Thorvaldsen and her White-Blue Approach, whereas Mono-Red pilot Adriano Moscato was definitely more used to high stakes matches. He was the reigning Italian national champion, after all, and a semifinalist at last year's World Magic Cup as well as the previous weekend's Grand Prix Madrid.

Adriano Moscato versus Kine Thorvaldsen

The first game between the two could have gone to Thorvaldsen if she had drawn Approach of the Second Sun at some point, but she didn't. Heavy sideboarding didn't help either, as the second game was marred by Thorvaldsen's mulligan and subsequent failure to find a second source of white mana within her first five lands. She died with a pair of sideboarded Regal Caracals in hand. This time Goliath won.

Notable Finishes

Adriano Moscato was by far the biggest name in the Standard playoffs. For two others, however, this marked their second Top 8 at the MKM Series not just overall, but their second Top 8 this weekend! Eiyong Ahn and Luca Ravagli had both made it to the final in Limited the day before; now both returned to the playoffs, proving to be on top of their game and making this one very successful weekend.

Standard finalists Luca Ravagli and Eiyong Ahn made another appearance in the Standard Top 8
