Metagame Breakdown

As predicted, both B/G/x Midrange and W/U/x Control had the strongest showings at the Modern Main Event in Frankfurt, with W/U/x being the slightly more popular choice at 11% and B/G/x clocking in at 10%. U/R Phoenix came up next with roughly 7% of the meta, a significant step down from our top two performers. Humans was popular as well, also netting around 7%. Tron and Mono-Red Prowess were also strong performers, claiming around 6% of the meta each. Scales / Affinity, with Hardened Scales showing up a bit than traditional Affinity, managed around 4% of the meta. Eldrazi Tron was also around the 4% range, whereas Dredge and Shadow decks only manages 3%. Interestingly, Dredge outperformed Hogaak. It, along with Thopter Foundry and Valakut, got close to the 3% mark. Spirits, Infect, and Vizier combo brought up the rear of our non-other decks with 2% a piece.

As always, Others was the largest category at our Modern event, and it’s an even wider category than usual. It made up 23% of the total number of decks and was filled with lots of strange brews. Some of the most prevalent others decks were Legacy-lite ports of Merfolk, using [Force of Negation] instead of Force of Will, and Goblins, using the plethora of new goblins from Modern Horizons. Hatebears also fell in this category, putting in a weaker performance than usual. There was a smattering of Free Spells and Living End decks. Elemental Ball decks, leveraging the new Lightning Skelemental also managed to score a few pilots. Overall, you can see, at least around the edges, the massive impact Modern Horizons had on the Modern format and it’ll be a while before it really settles.
