Metagame Breakdown

Urza, Lord High Artificer may be all the rage at other Modern events, but not here at the Cardmarket Series. Our Modern masters don’t want to play Urza, but instead prefer fun, older decks like Death’s Shadow and B/G/x midrange, both of which showed up the most at 12% and 10% respectively. Outside of the 10+% range, we have Burn and Amulet titan, next at 8% and 7%. This was definitely a poor showing by Cardmarket Series standards for W/U control, showing how hard it is to contain the myriad avenues of attack in Modern right now. Amulet Titan and Urza were next at 5%, while Tron and Infect both managed 4% of the field. Stoneblade, Eldrazi, Spirits, Valakut, Dredge, and U/R/x Tempo all managed close to 3% of the meta and storm rounds out the decks that beat the other category with 2% of the field.

The Other category was similarly large to Barcelona, making up 22% of the meta. Within it, we had a lot of the usual suspects like Merfolk, Slivers, and Goblins. But, additionally, we had some relatively new contenders like Soulherder and BUG Sanctuary. Some of the decks that just barely missed the cut include CrabVine, Hardened Scales, Zoo, and Mono-Green Devotion – a deck that has made some waves in Modern’s little brother, Pioneer. 2019 has been a tumultuous year for Modern, but the format has persevered and remains the diverse playground it’s always been.
