At MKMS Barcelona, Dennis Zens did it again!

Going into the weekend, Zens already was in first place in the race for Power 8 glory, if only four points ahead of his two closest rivals. But at the Modern main event on Saturday, he showed everyone that his previous achievements were no fluke. After eight rounds, he entered the Top 8 ranked first of the original 166 competitors. And Zens, using an updated version of his trusty Death's Shadow, finished the tournament in first place too.

So, in summary, Zens had played in five main events of the MKM Series this year, reached the Top 8 four times, and won twice: a worthy player to head the Power 8 Leaderboard, which he was almost assured to be doing now. Everyone else would likely only fight for second place on Sunday.

Metagame Breakdown

As usual, or probably even more so than usual, the Modern metagame proved a veritable treasure trove of variety. No single archetype even accounted for eight percent of the field, not even when one painted the picture in very broad strokes …

For instance, the thirteen Death's Shadow decks listed here included Grixis (10) and Jund (2) variants as well as one Esper version. Likewise, ten of the B/G/x Midrange players went with Jund, two with Abzan, and one player eschewed a third color completely. Hatebears showed up in mono-white, white-black, green-white, or Bant garb, and Urza's Tower and its fellow landmarks appeared alongside Forests in five decks and alongside Eldrazi-infested Wastes eight times.

The huge “Others” faction, meanwhile, featured five decks with three entries each: Grixis Control, Mill, Abzan Company, Smallpox, and Lantern Control; two copies each of: Elves, Ad Nauseam, Zoo, and Slippery Bogles; as well as way too many singletons to list them all.
