Everyone's a Winner at the Largest German Magic Tournament since 2012!

The German Magic scene's alive and well, despite the absence of large premier events like the Grand Prix and Pro Tour in recent years. If anybody needed proof for this, the MKM Series provided plenty; with 617 players, our Modern main event was the largest tournament in Germany since 2012!

(And alongside this, 127 played in the Grand Standard Trial and more than 40 in the Highlander side event, filling the hall to maximum capacity!)

617 meant ten long rounds, meant the Top 8 was about to start shortly before midnight. In keeping with the day's theme—a celebration of Magic and its community—the Top 8 came together and agreed to split the prize pool, resulting in 775 Euros per person.

Congratulations to David Biedermann, Bernd Schwabe, Julian Knab, Marcel Costa, Sebastian Wibmer, Tobias Debatin, Jonas Zimmermann, and Andreas Müller (pictured above, left to right), our eight Modern champions! And congratulations to the community for making the MKM Series Frankfurt 2016 an event to remember!

Update on the Prize Payout:

Due to the large turnout, it was decided to increase the prize pool of the Modern tournament. Originally, prizes were announced to be paid down to 16th place, or 32nd place if the attendance broke the 200 mark.

With 617 players, however, prizes were again raised for almost everyone within the Top 32, by close to 20% in total. In the end, prizes for the Top 8 were increased yet again by a combined 800 Euros, raising the total prize purse of the event to 7800 Euros, compared to the 5880 advertised initially. You can find the full updated prize payout on our event information page.

We like to thank all of our players for making the MKM Series Frankfurt 2016 such a memorable event!

Meet Modern Champ David Biedermann

After ten rounds had been played in yesterday's Modern main event, David Biedermann towered above everyone else at the very top of the standings, with an unrivaled record of 9-0-1. Going by original plans, the Top 8 playoffs would have followed then to determine the...

Round 10: Michael Deckert vs. Bernd Schwabe

This was one of the most important matches of the day. We often call it a "win and in" and that's exactly what it is. These two players couldn't afford to draw their match as that would have knocked both of them straight out of competition. A win, on the other hand,...

Round 9 Feature Match: Laurent Calligaro vs. Jonas Zimmermann

With records of 7-1, both of these players needed but one more win to clinch a Top 8 berth. Neither one was a stranger to high-stakes Magic: As coincidence would have it, both had played at the 2014 World Magic Cup, Laurent Calligaro as part of Team Luxembourg, Jonas...

Round 9: Turning up the Heat

Making the Top 8 cut in a gigantic 10 round tournament is definitely not an easy task. Most likely even a score of 8-2 (24 points) will not be enough for anyone. Of the players we talked about earlier, Julian Knab is 8-1 right now and looking to draw in, while Niclas...

Meet Eliott Boussaud

Eliott Boussaud is one of our star players at the MKM Series - he won both our last two Standard main events in Milan and in Madrid! He also won GP Prague in 2015, made it to the Grand Prix Finals in Utrecht in 2014 and made Top 8 at GP Prague in 2013. So far he has...

The Curious, the Cool, and the Crazy Decks of Modern

In the end, none of the following decks got there, meaning the Top 8 or even anywhere near that. But they definitely deserve a spot in our coverage because of their uniqueness and their creative design. Sebastian Ziller, for instance, was the only one of 617...

Commanding the Allied Forces with Niclas Chlench

In Round 6 of our massive Modern main event, we witnessed a true battle of David versus Goliath. In this case, David was 22-year-old Niclas Chlench from Dortmund, Germany, who described himself as "mostly just an FNM player." That was, until now. Today he had started...

Artist Feature: Volkan Baga

While the many events we’re offering this weekend are certainly reason enough to make the trip to Frankfurt, we have even more in store for you. One of these little treats is our artist section where some of the all-time Magic greats are busy signing autographs,...

Meet Julian Knab

While everybody else was busy trying to win their second match of the day in our huge Modern Main event, I managed to sit down with "Julian Tsubasa" (Julian Knab), who is one of the rising stars on the MKM Series! He was able to enjoy his free time, as he won two byes...

Yesterday’s Modern Trial Winners

Yesterday's main event, due to the limitations of Vintage, had only featured 57 players. However, yesterday's main side event, the appropriately named "Grand Modern Trial," had 142 players battling for free entry plus two byes for today's tournament. That turnout...

Metagame Breakdown

617 decklists have all been checked, counted, and categorized, for the largest metagame breakdown that we have ever done. To offer at least a semblance of clarity, we combined Jund, Abzan, and mixes thereof into one B/G/(x) Midrange category.

The same is true for the white-blue control decks, most of which splashed some red cards, a few of which splashed some black cards, while the second largest contingent was strictly two-colored. One of the more interesting developments here was the inclusion of Nahiri, the Harbinger and a singleton Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.

U/R/(x) Aggrocontrol, meanwhile, is populated mostly by blue-red Delver of Secrets decks, but includes a number of aggressive Jeskai decks and a couple of decks with green.

Of course, this still leaves 164 decks in our “Other” category. The most notable entries here, with around ten decks each, were Elves, Living End, Dredge, Soul Sisters, Blue Moon, and White-Black Tokens. Even more unusual decks like 8 Rack, Jeskai Ascendancy, Gifts Ungiven, Mono-Green Stompy, and Goblins all had entered at least five representatives into the tournament, showcasing the immense diversity of the Modern format!
