The weekend of MKM Series Frankfurt 2017 began with Vintage action on Friday. While 108 players fought for their last chance to earn byes for the next day's Modern event and 79 tried their luck with Legacy, 32 veterans ventured into the world of Vintage, quite a high turnout for the format.

In recent months Vintage had been dominated by Monastery Mentor decks, but with the restriction of both Gush and Gitaxian Probe all bets were off. Although one reasonable assumption was that Mishra's Workshop decks would benefit from the weakening of the Mentor strategy. Many players drew that conclusion, but the only one to act upon it was Kevin Wagner, and he was rewarded for it. Wagner piloted his Workshop deck all the way to the top, claimed the title and trophy, and became the weekend's first winner!

After the latest Banned and Restricted Announcement, the Mentor deck lost its popularity. Instead, Eldrazi and Oath of Druids decks were the most played decks today.
