380 players entered the Legacy main event on Sunday morning, with high hopes for points and prizes, fame and fortune. After a full ten rounds, eight of them sat for the playoffs. Among them, Amadeus Grün was piloting maybe the most interesting brew of them all. Dubbed “Men of Steel” by Grün, it was something like a cross between Affinity's robots and the Ancient Tomb-powered prison strategies. With it, he was undefeated up until the final.

There, however, he ran afoul of one Tomas Mar and his famous “Czech Pile.” Mar had long been one of the most high-regarded members of the European Legacy community; he had made the Top 8 at two MKM Series events previously and had earned a spot among the MKMS Power 8 last season. This year, Mar started out with a big victory, claiming his first trophy since his win in Vintage at the 2015 SuperFinals.

On the eve of MKM Series Frankfurt 2018, it was time for us to once again take a step back and review what happened so far … Nine weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Barcelona for the fifth and final stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 156 Legacy...

Metagame Breakdown

380 players entered the Legacy main event on Sunday, and brought just about 380 different decks. Well, some decks were more alike than others, of course, and after much debate, we have broken down the field as follows:

Grixis or four-color decks starring Delver of Secrets / Insectile Aberration took the lead, with Leovold, Emissary of Trest in second place. So far not a big surprise. What was surprising, however, was the large number of Prison-style decks featuring various forms of fast mana, mostly relying on City of Traitors/Ancient Tomb, and turning the key to the cell door with things like Trinisphere, Chalice of the Void, and/or Blood Moon. And a little lower in popularity but definitely on the upswing, we found quite a number of Pox/Smallpox strategies.

Legacy might not change as quickly as some other formats, but there definitely was movement in the metagame!
