Andreas Müller takes down the first 2018 MKMS Modern main event!

613 players entered the fray at our Modern main event. After ten grueling rounds of Swiss, eight players rose above the rest, set to duke it out for the first 2018 MKM Series Modern championship. The stakes were high and the players were tired, but we needed a champion and so our players soldiered on.

Andreas Müller, piloting a spicy B/G Rock brew managed to defeat all who challenged him, including an exciting three round match against Manuel Menges, a seasoned Affinity master. Things looked dire for Andreas, when he mulliganed to five after losing a tense game one. He managed to keep Menges contained, though, taking down the semifinal match and then, after a quick finals round, the tournament.

Metagame Breakdown

The Modern main event kicked off Saturday at MKMS Frankfurt 2018. 613 people entered and, as usual, our Modern event showed us an ocean’s worth of different decks. Naturally, we got a clear look at the Modern metagame at the start of the 2018 MKM Series circuit. Tron was the name of the game here in Frankfurt, having made up a whopping 11% of the total pool of decks. Death’s Shadow covered 8% of the remaining field, tying with BGx midrange variants, which also took 8% of the spotlight.

Aggro Decks were popular as well, with Affinity, Burn, Hatebears, and Humans having combined to cover 17% of the field. Players were similarly enamored with popular combo lists, with GWx Company, Storm, and Valakut making up 15% of the total pool. Outside of Tron, control decks were left behind, with only 3% of the field choosing to play URx Moon and 5% choosing to play UWx lists.

We also found a surprising amount of Dredge decks, which had a larger showing than both Humans and URx Moon decks. Merfolk also made up a surprising amount of Frankfurt’s decks, competing, number-wise, with popular decks like Humans and URx Moon as well as having a larger showing than Lantern. Our “other” category is also notable, as it showed us how healthy Modern is currently, with 24% of decks falling into a variety of archetypes not listed here.
