After seven exciting rounds of Swiss, eight decks were left standing at MKMS Frankfurt’s Standard main event. The quarterfinals were upon us, and we had an exciting set of matches. Four Temur Energy decks were matched up against four decks devoid of energy in a true test of the format-defining archetype!

Well, the results were in and Temur Energy did not disappoint, winning 75% of its quarterfinal matches. It only lost 1-2 to a spicy green-white aggro brew. The semifinals were a different story, however, as 15-year-old Melvin Schmidt took down Philip Krieger’s interesting take on Standard, which cemented an all-energy finals.

Melvin Schmidt, in his second major Magic tournament ever, found himself across from North Carolina-born Chris Castro-Rappl in an energy mirror. Game one ended in Melvin’s favor, after a tense back and forth between Glorybringers. Unfortunately, Melvin ended up short on lands two games straight, giving Chris the match and his first Standard main event victory in the MKM Series. You can check out our video coverage of the Standard finals match on our twitch page: http://www.twitch.tv/magiccardmarket/videos/all.

Congratulations to Chris Castro-Rappl, Standard Champion of MKM Series Frankfurt 2018!

Quick Question: Most Overrated Standard Decks?

With more stops and more events than ever this was going to be happy new year at the MKM Series, and we wasted no time to get going! We started into the new season right away on this, the very first weekend of 2018. For a fresh look at the state of Standard, we asked...

Previously at the MKM Series: Standard in Barcelona 2017

On the eve of MKM Series Frankfurt 2018, it was time for us to once again take a step back and review what happened so far … Nine weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Barcelona for the fifth and final stop of the MKM Series in 2017, including 49 stars...

Metagame Breakdown

127 Standard players arrived here in Frankfurt for the last MKMS stop before Rivals of Ixalan dropped to shake up the metagame.

Energy was still rampant, therefore, with over 30% of the field choosing to pilot the format-defining archetype. Mono Red held the title for second-most played deck with 16% of the field choosing the aggressive alternative to energy. Surprisingly, considering its recent success, only 5% of players chose to play God-Pharaoh’s Gift. The deck was apparently not favored here over Mono Red and Energy.

In addition to the expected archetypes, several less-common decks surfaced here in Frankfurt, including U/B Control, which 5% of the field piloted. Dinosaurs also saw some use, with 3% of the field choosing to give them a try, perhaps in preparation for Rivals of Ixalan’s release. We also saw a smattering of W/U, Cycling decks, Token decks, and Mono-Black Aggro decks, each represented by 5% of our total field of players.

Standard was more interesting here than in Barcelona, but Standard is still a mostly solved format.Rivals of Ixalan is just around the corner, though, and will hopefully bring Standard some much-needed variety, giving us a diverse, thriving metagame in Rome!
