393 Masters of Modern entered the fray here in Hamburg, but alas, only one could claim total victory over the Modern Main Event. Nicklas Krull managed to claim the title this go around, piloting a spicy Esper Gifts list that made good use of a mainboard Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and a pair of sideboarded Damping Spheres. In the Semi-Finals, we saw Krull pitted against Christopher Brunner's Tron list, which he managed to take down with a clutch top-decked Thoughtseize in Game two, stripping away Brunner's only remaining threat.

In the Finals, he faced off against Jacob Heiring Soerensen's Jund list, so it was back to the classics. Game one ended up being a stunning depiction of the power of the new Teferi, Hero of Dominaria, with Krull's planeswalker burying Soerensen's deck in value. Game two was a repeat of Rome's finale, with Jace, the Mind Sculptor pitted against Bloodbraid Elf. This time though, Jace walked away with the victory. Speaking of that second game, Krull also showed the audience some of the variance involved in Magic, making a miraculous string of top decks after an Inquisition of Kozilek forced him to reveal no cards costing less than 4 mana. He proceeded to get a Spell Snare, a Fatal Push, and a Path to Exile in his first three turns, giving him the gas he needed to power through the Soerensen's early turns and make the most of the powerful four-drops Krull had kept in his hand. He finally closed the game out with his teched combo finish – an Unburial Rites grabbing Iona, Shield of Emeria. MKMS Hamburg 2018's Modern finale ended up being an exciting bout between two tried and true Modern archetypes, albeit with the W/Ux list sporting some cool Dominaria-inspired tricks.

Metagame Breakdown

Modern tournaments recently have seen a marked increase in decks like black-red Hollow One, five-color Humans, and green-white Auras. Surprisingly though, MKMS Hamburg 2018's Modern Main Event, comprised of 393 players, looked quite different. Going in, we expected these three powerful archetypes to have strong representation, especially five-color Humans, which has more or less claimed the top spot in the current Modern metagame. Despite this, only eight of our Masters of Modern chose to sleeve up the tried and true deck.

Instead, UWx decks stole the spotlight with 32 players choosing Snapcaster Mage as their weapon of choice. Many of these players also chose to include the new Teferi, Hero of Dominaria, showing Dominaria's immediate effect on Modern archetypes. Jund was chosen second-most, with 25 players choosing to sleeve up Bloodbraid Elf and Tarmogoyf. Damping Sphere seems to have failed in eliminating Tron and Storm from Modern, with 13 players choosing to sleeve up the Urza Lands and nine players choosing Grapeshot for their kill condition. Red-green Ponza also provided quite the surprise, with 14 players making it one of the most represented decks here in Hamburg. The main takeaway though, as it always is at MKMS Modern Main Events, is that the MKMS Modern metagame was as wide open as usual, with the most played deck accounting for only 8% of the metagame.
