MKM Milan 2017's Modern main event brought out 117 players, from near and far, full of hope for fame and fortune. After eight rounds of Swiss, eight of them sat down for the playoffs, including Angelo Cadei in his third MKM Top 8.

Cadei had come this far with an innovative Jeskai build featuring the combo of Saheeli Rai and Felidar Guardian, and he wasn't the only one to make the Top 8 with an interesting design. Andrea Cibak did so with a Spirit tribal deck and Tomo Pejanovic Nosaka ran a black-red midrange deck.

In the end, however, two Affinity decks provided a reality check and kept the more unusual constructs in check, crushing all opposition. Both Affinity players, Riccardo Cecolin and Domenico Di Noia, met in the final. However, Di Noia's Affinity deck wasn't such a known quantity after all. Replacing some number of lands with Welding Jars, he was able to make good use of Frogmite and Myr Enforcer, finally putting the affinity back into Affinity!

Congratulations to Domenico Di Noia, the Modern Champion of MKM Series Milan 2017!

Final: Domenico Di Noia vs. Riccardo Cecolin

This was it. After eight rounds of Swiss plus quarter- and semifinals, with 115 others eliminated, it all came down to one more match to determine the Modern champion. To be precise, it came down to an Affinity mirror match. However, these two Affinity decks likely...

Semifinal: Domenico Di Noia vs. Nicolas Duguet

Meanwhile on the other side of the bracket these two players had won their respective quarterfinal matches. Both used the power of artifacts to defeat their opponents. Domenico Di Noia chose the aggressive nature of artifacts and decided to play an Affinity deck. In...

Quarterfinal: Angelo Cadei vs. Riccardo Cecolin

This was not the first time in the Top 8 at the MKM Series for Angelo Cadei. He had lost in the finals of the Modern main event at MKM Series Madrid 2015 and walked away with the winner's trophy in Legacy at MKM Series Prague 2016. His previous accomplishments weren't...

Run of the Mill with David Teich

A surprisingly large number of people came to MKM Series Milan 2017 to play Mill in Modern. Okay, the actual number was three, but a surprise it was nevertheless. The strategy, named for the original {Millstone}, was often made fun of in the past, because milling in...

Modern Trial Winning Decklists

Today is not only the release date for Magic’s Modern Masters 2017 Edition but also the last MKMS Milan Trial day. A total of 24 Modern players took their chance to earn a bye for the Modern main event on Saturday. After five rounds of great battles and mind games the...

Previously at the MKM Series: Modern in Prague

On the eve of the Modern main event here at the MKM Series Milan 2017, we decided to take a look at what happened before. Sixteen weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Prague for the fifth and final stop of the MKM Series 2017, including 290 masters of...

Metagame Breakdown

117 players showed up to our Modern main event this weekend, and the decks they brought with them displayed the usual variety we have come to expect from the format. In fact, Affinity was the only single deck to reach double-digit numbers.

Only when looking at the macro archetypes, was Affinity overtaken by two others: Midrange decks combining black and green with one third color—white, red, or even blue—as well as blue control decks—Grixis, Esper, Jeskai with Nahiri, the Harbinger/Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or even Saheeli Rai/Felidar Guardian, and “Blue Moon.”

Among the Burn decks, Naya was the clear frontrunner, followed by just red and white and one deck with a bit of blue and Delver of Secrets / Insectile Aberration. The Valakut, Molten Pinnacle decks on the other hand were almost all of the Scapeshift persuasion, with but one player combining Primeval Titan and Through the Breach.

The lower popularity tiers were good for a few surprises. Mill decks drawing level with “self-mill” decks (also known as Dredge) was astounding, and having more people play Eight Rack than Death's Shadow Jund wasn't exactly what we had expected either; the alleged best deck was only piloted by two players.

Two players each were also running Goryo's Vengeance, Lantern Control, Blue-Red Kiln Fiend, and Slippery Bogles. The list of singletons, finally, was long and included such highlights as Enchantress and a Spirit tribal deck. All in all, the tournament featured no less than 34 different archetypes!
