After 16 weeks of hibernation the MagicCardMarket Series is back and takes the first stop of the MKM Series 2017 to Milan in Italy. We started off the weekend with a main event format full of the most powerful synergies and cards dating back to Magic’s origins: Vintage.

Once upon a time creatures were ridiculously underpowered in the Vintage format – but times have changed for a while by now. Creatures are taking over even in the former Combo and Control format. With 6 copies the Monastery Mentor decks once again lead the field, followed by Leovold, Shops, and Dredge all of which could be considered creature decks in a way as well. After five rounds of swiss and three elimination rounds with a decent variety of six different archetypes in the Top 8, Luca Lovino was crowned as the new Vintage champion. Giving a good impression of the most popular deck-choice in this tournament Luca showcased the power of Monastery Mentor in combination with a variety of blue cantrips and draw spells such as Gush. His opponent Rüdger Hesse lost in the finals with his White Eldrazi deck, after beating the other two Mentor decks in the Top8. Rüdiger was nevertheless a winner, happily accepting his prizes for second place in his first Vintage tournament ever!

The Mentor decks preserved their leadership in both- success and popularity here in Milan, but Vintage enthusiasts all over Europe have tinkered with new ideas as well. Paradoxical Storm, Leovold, and Metalworker found some success, and Andrea Mengucci even made Top8 with the new Oath variant featuring Saheeli Rai and Sun Titan.

Metagame Breakdown

Take a look at the complete breakdown of the decks in our Vintage main event at the MKM Series Milan 2017. 27 players came to play with the best cards ever printed today. Monastery Mentor was the most played archetype with 6 copies in the field, followed by three copies each of Storm, Dredge, Shops, and Leovold Control. The Shops variants were all over the place though, using unusual approaches like Metalworker with expensive 1-ofs or even a bunch of colored artifact cards with Padeem, Consul of Innovation! Two players brought Grixis Pyromancer decks, while two trusted in Oath of Druids. One of them is Platinum Pro Andrea Mengucci, who is playing the relatively new variant with Saheeli Rai and Sun Titan. Given that this interesting deck is piloted by very capable hands means that we will likely get to see this deck in action during the Top8 feature matches.
