Affinity didn't play a large role in the Modern metagame at the MKM Series Prague 2016, amounting to just about three percent of the field. It did however play a large role in the tournament, being the only deck archetype to place two players into the Top 8. Of course Affinity was famous for its tendency to shine exactly when its share of the metagame was lowest and the amount of sideboard hate plummeted.

In total, 290 players entered the Modern main event. In the end, Štěpán Dudešek had bested them all, including Marius Hausmann, who returned to the playoffs after his Modern Top 8 at the MKM Series Prague 2015, and Philipp Schmidt, who piloted his Elves all the way to the finals.

Congratulations to Štěpán Dudešek, who hoisted the trophy and walked away with 1,200 Euros in MagicCardMarket.eu credit!

Congratulations to Štěpán Dudešek, the Modern Master of MKM Series Prague 2016!

Final: Philipp Schmidt vs. Štěpán Dudešek

"My wife told me to come home with money," Štěpán Dudešek said, "'Or don't come home at all.'" This at least Dudešek had already accomplished, as he would walk away with at least 600 Euros in MagicCardMarket.eu credit. Now the Affinity player was one match win away...

Semifinal: Robert Rettenbacher vs. Philipp Schmidt

When I asked Philipp Schmidt who would win this battle between his Elves and Robert Rettenbacher's Affinity, he said, "Normally, this comes down to the die roll. Is there a die roll here?" There wasn't, the player with the higher seat in the Swiss standings getting to...

Quarterfinal: Marius Hausmann vs. Štěpán Dudešek

Germany's Marius Hausmann had made quite a name for himself within the Legacy community, with successful runs at several tournaments across Europe. His first Top 8 at the MKM Series, however, had come in Modern, in Prague last year. This year, he was back and had...

A Deck We Like to Call “Eldritch Moon”

In Round 5 of the Modern main event, at one of the top three tables, we saw something which piqued our interest: one of the popular toolbox combo decks, this one powered by Eldritch Evolution, but with Blood Moon! Amand Dosimont, a player from Belgium with a GP victory …

Modern Trial Winning Decklists

While the weekend's main events were only scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, the action already began on Friday. In a record number of Last-Chance Trials, players fought for their final chance to earn a bye for Saturday's Modern. Their last chance was our first, that...

Previously at the MKM Series: Modern in London

On the eve of the Modern main event here at the MKM Series Prague 2016, we decided to take a little look at what happened before. Eleven weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in London for the fourth stop of the MKM Series in 2016, including 91 masters of...

Welcome to Modern: Affinity with Manuel Menges

Metagame Breakdown

Almost 300 players showed up for our Modern event this weekend, and the decks they brought with them were good for a few surprises. For instance, Affinity was quite underrepresented compared to the turnout a few months back. Dredge, one of the most feared bogeymen of the format, was hardly represented at all. Meanwhile, a version of Death and Taxes combining the usual hatebears like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Leonin Arbiter with Thought-Knot Seer was now among the ten most popular archetypes.

At the top, of course, midrange decks based in black and green still ruled the day, with about three times as many Jund as Abzan players. Infect had climbed to the number two spot, while toolbox combo decks built around Chord of Calling, Collected Company, and even Eldritch Evolution accounted for about seven percent of the field.

Grixis proved the blue control deck of choice, Naya Burn proved to be the deck for today's straightforward aggro players. Urzatron decks appeared in many different shapes, and shades: blue, green-white, red-green, or even completely colorless. Meanwhile, decks killing with Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle were all red and green, but were just as likely to use Primeval Titan and Scapeshift as they were to combine the Titan with Through the Breach.

However, all of the deck types listed only accounted for 74 percent of the metagame and only one barely crossed the ten-percent threshold. So, one thing didn't change: Modern was as diverse as ever!
