Metagame Breakdown

From the start, Legacy looked like most interesting event here in Prague. Deathrite Shaman and Gitaxian Probe were recently axed, completely reshaping the format. Our event represented the first major test of the new Legacy format since the bans came down, and we're happy to report that the format seems more diverse than it's ever been. R/U/G Delver was the most played deck, with 21 pilots electing to sleeve up their Stifles and Wastelands, which amounts to just over 9% of the 227-player main event. Death and Taxes also saw a noticeable uptick in players, with 18 players electing to give Aether Vial and the old standby a chance in a format with, ideally, significantly less Kolaghan's Command. Stoneblade also, for similar reasons, has made a strong resurgence, with 16 players electing to dust off their Stoneforge Mystics. Miracles managed to secure 16 pilots as well, showing a strong increase in popularity, and potentially establishing it as the control deck of choice in a post-Deathrite Legacy.

Reanimator stole the spotlight for combo decks, with 15 pilots. All of which elected for the B/R version, apparently valuing speed over slower and more resilient blue variant. Sneak and Show and Storm were nipping at Reanimators heels though with 13 and 11 players respectively. Elves, despite the loss of Deathrite, also found a home with 10 players. The normal off-meta staples, like Lands, Maverick, and Eldrazi, managed respectable showings with nine players choosing Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, and seven choosing a toolbox or big Lovecraftian monsters. Grixis Control also made quite the showing, with eight players choosing it. Perhaps this will be the new home of Kess, Dissident Mage.

As with all our Legacy events, there are far too many decks to show them all. We had 64 “others” this time around. Included here are old tier one decks like Grixis Delver, which managed to grab five pilots, and Mono-Red Prison which only managed three pilots. Goblins also had a bit of a resurgence, with five people electing to run vial with the classic red tribe. Legacy managed to deliver exactly what we wanted here in Prague, with a huge variety of new and old coming together to duke it out and see what's the new hotness in a post-Deathrite Legacy.
