For the second time in as many Legacy main events, Czech Pile rose to the top. This time, however, it wasn't at the hands of the deck's inventor, but rather in Nicolas Crepelle's capable hands. Crepelle played in three matches on our stream, so he really was able to show off his prowess with the deck. In Round 7, he found himself up against Power 8 member Jonathan Anghelescu and his Sneak & Show, in a match where Crepelle managed to secure a relatively quick 2-0 victory. His second appearance was in the semifinals, against Raffaele Cefala's Jund, a much grindier affair. It went to game three, where an early Jace, the Mind Sculptor managed to keep Cefala on one land for the short remainder of his tournament run.

Crepelle's third match was, of course, the final against Marco Pacilio's rather unique Show and Tell/Omniscience deck, which used Burning Wish to fetch Enter the Infinite. Pacilio had been able to show off his combo before, in his quarterfinal match against Power 8 member Julian Knab. But he was never able to enter the infinite here, as Czech Pile proved too strong once again. Can any deck end its reign over the MKM Series?

Congratulations to Nicolas Crepelle, Legacy Champion of MKMS Rome!

Tournament Organizer Spotlight – Jurgen Baert

MKMS Rome may be our second event of the year, but it is also the first event run by our new tournament organizer - Tournament Center. Jurgen Baert made sure everything ran smoothly this weekend, but he still found a few minutes for an interview, in which he explains...

Previously at the MKM Series: Legacy in Frankfurt 2018

On the eve of MKM Series Rome, it was once again time for us to take a step back and review what happened last time at the MKM Series. Ten weeks ago, players from all over Europe gathered in Frankfurt for the first stop of the MKM Series 2018, including 380 Legacy...

Metagame Breakdown

111 Legacy legionnares showed up here in Rome to showcase Legacy's famed complexity. Lands and Sneak and Show did this by showing up more than Grixis Delver, a true shocker in Legacy's current state. Lands, in particular had one of, if not its best showing with nine players, or 8% of the field chose to sleeve up Tabernacle at the Pendrell Vale, a record percentage for MKM Series Legacy Main Events. By comparison, Lands was the 6th most played deck in Frankfurt with only 6% of the field choosing to play it. In Barcelona and Hamburg, the deck was so underrepresented that it doesn't even appear in our metagame breakdowns. It may be because Tabernacle is more accessible her in Italy, where it was printed in significantly larger numbers.

Grixis Delver came just after Lands and Sneak and Show, with eight players choosing to sleeve up the “best” deck in Legacy. Death and Taxes, Miracles, and Mono Red Prison was the deck of choice for seven entrants, which continues the rise of Mono Red Prison in Legacy. On that subject, it seems that many players were prescient about the appearance of Red Prison, as only one player chose to sleeve up Legacy ANT here in Rome.

Elves, Czech Pile, and Eldrazi all had 6 entrants, which shows how close all of these decks were when it comes to number of pilots… certainly a great sign for the Legacy metagame here if players can't decide what deck is right to play at a major tournament. Reanimator was the second-most popular combo deck, with five people choosing to reanimate Griselbrand for the GG. Overall, Legacy was diverse and, in addition, very evenly distributed. No deck had a significant number-of-pilots advantage going into the tournament. So, the best decks should rise to the top!
