The MKM Series Frankfurt 2016 is in the books!

It's been an exciting weekend with players traveling wide and far to make this one of the largest non-GP Magic tournament weekends in Germany! We put up impressive numbers in our Modern (617) and Legacy (410) main events, but we offered many more opportunities to play exciting games of Magic and players were happily taking advantage of them.

More than 40 players enrolled in our Highlander event and the Grand Trials also sported impressive numbers: 142 players for Modern, 127 players for Legacy and 75 for the Standard main event. At one point this weekend, there were only 2 seats left in the entire venue! If one were to add up all the registrations for the various events we offered, we are talking about more than 2000 sign-ups!

Below, we provided you with our coverage overview so you can quickly navigate to all our articles or other information like the various metagame breakdowns, etc.

Legacy Format

Round 10 Feature Match: Niklas Kronberger vs. Fabian Moyschewitz

Niklas made Top 8 in our Legacy main event at the MKM Series in Rome last year, while Fabian has multiple GP Top 16s to his name, and both players have had lots of success on other independent tournament series' in the past. These players clearly know what they are...

Let’s Delve into the Secrets of Top Pro Petr Sochůrek

One familiar face which I didn't expect to see this weekend was that of Petr Sochůrek. The professional Magic player from the Czech Republic could usually be found at Pro Tours and at Grand Prix, hunting for Pro Points, often at the top tables. In fact, it was barely...

Old School Feature Match: Matous Trajhan vs. Marc Lanigra

We are supporting a very wide range of Constructed formats at the MKM Series, even unofficial ones like Highlander and Old School Vintage in our side events! Matous' favorite format is regular Vintage, which he plays about once per week with his friends. Old School...

Round 9 Feature Match: David Hölker vs. Niklas Kronberger

"You sure picked a sweet feature match!" Niklas Kronberger said when he sat down in the feature match area across from his buddy David Hölker. The two chattered away right from the start, and basically never stopped. "Oh, the pressure …" Hölker exclaimed. "One of us...

Judge Spotlight: Saverio Adamo

5 rounds in, and it already feels like another very long day at the MKM Series Frankfurt. While most players (as well as us coverage guys) were lucky enough to sit most of the time, an entire group of people instead opted to stand on their feet, get in earlier than...

Yesterday’s Legacy Trial Winners

127 players entered into yesterday's Grand Legacy Trial, to fight for prizes and byes. After seven rounds of Swiss, the Top 4 players were each awarded two byes for today's Legacy main event: André Pirschel and Franz Hölzler with matching records of 6-0-1, Maarten van...

Artist Feature: Ben Maier

While Nils Hamm and Volkan Baga left yesterday evening, one brave artist remained to sign cards, offer some oversized versions of the excellent artworks he created and of course have a number of friendly chats with the players. Ben Maier traveled here all the way from...

Modern Format

Meet Modern Champ David Biedermann

After ten rounds had been played in yesterday's Modern main event, David Biedermann towered above everyone else at the very top of the standings, with an unrivaled record of 9-0-1. Going by original plans, the Top 8 playoffs would have followed then to determine the...

Round 10: Michael Deckert vs. Bernd Schwabe

This was one of the most important matches of the day. We often call it a "win and in" and that's exactly what it is. These two players couldn't afford to draw their match as that would have knocked both of them straight out of competition. A win, on the other hand,...

Round 9 Feature Match: Laurent Calligaro vs. Jonas Zimmermann

With records of 7-1, both of these players needed but one more win to clinch a Top 8 berth. Neither one was a stranger to high-stakes Magic: As coincidence would have it, both had played at the 2014 World Magic Cup, Laurent Calligaro as part of Team Luxembourg, Jonas...

Round 9: Turning up the Heat

Making the Top 8 cut in a gigantic 10 round tournament is definitely not an easy task. Most likely even a score of 8-2 (24 points) will not be enough for anyone. Of the players we talked about earlier, Julian Knab is 8-1 right now and looking to draw in, while Niclas...

Meet Eliott Boussaud

Eliott Boussaud is one of our star players at the MKM Series - he won both our last two Standard main events in Milan and in Madrid! He also won GP Prague in 2015, made it to the Grand Prix Finals in Utrecht in 2014 and made Top 8 at GP Prague in 2013. So far he has...

The Curious, the Cool, and the Crazy Decks of Modern

In the end, none of the following decks got there, meaning the Top 8 or even anywhere near that. But they definitely deserve a spot in our coverage because of their uniqueness and their creative design. Sebastian Ziller, for instance, was the only one of 617...

Commanding the Allied Forces with Niclas Chlench

In Round 6 of our massive Modern main event, we witnessed a true battle of David versus Goliath. In this case, David was 22-year-old Niclas Chlench from Dortmund, Germany, who described himself as "mostly just an FNM player." That was, until now. Today he had started...

Artist Feature: Volkan Baga

While the many events we’re offering this weekend are certainly reason enough to make the trip to Frankfurt, we have even more in store for you. One of these little treats is our artist section where some of the all-time Magic greats are busy signing autographs,...

Meet Julian Knab

While everybody else was busy trying to win their second match of the day in our huge Modern Main event, I managed to sit down with "Julian Tsubasa" (Julian Knab), who is one of the rising stars on the MKM Series! He was able to enjoy his free time, as he won two byes...

Yesterday’s Modern Trial Winners

Yesterday's main event, due to the limitations of Vintage, had only featured 57 players. However, yesterday's main side event, the appropriately named "Grand Modern Trial," had 142 players battling for free entry plus two byes for today's tournament. That turnout...

Standard Format

Round 9: Paul Sokolov vs. Artur Queiroz

Despite the fact that we just featured Queiroz, we decided to put the spotlight on him for the second time in a row. He's one of only 4 players that don't have the luxury that they can simply draw into the Top 8 AND that can lock up their spot by winning their match....

Round 8 Feature Match: Artur Queiroz vs. Joshua Bausch

"This is the win-and-in, eh?" said Joshua Bausch, a regular at JK Entertainment's store in Frankfurt, when he sat down at the feature match table. With a record of 6-1, the hometown hero now had to play the somewhat more cosmopolitan Artur Queiroz. Queiroz had once...

The final stretch

We are entering the decisive phase for the last time this weekend. Our 268 player Standard main event will soon be cut down to the final eight players. Right now we are in Swiss round 8 out of 9 and the top tables are filled with three copies each of G/W Tokens and...

Meet Mikael Linden

We didn't have time to sit down with Mikael Linden for an interview on Friday, when he won our Vintage main event for the second time, so I took hold of him today instead. Mikael started playing Magic around 1997 by buying 60 green cards from a friend. Another mutual...

Old School impressions

We took some pictures during yesterdays's Old School tournament for your viewing pleasure, as the cards in these decks are a real treat to look at! We hope you still enjoy this blast from the past on a slight delay: Impressions from the Old School tournament:...

Yesterday’s Standard Trial Winners

Yesterday's Grand Standard Trial was originally supposed to award two byes to just the winner, but with more than 70 players that honor was bestowed upon the Top 2 instead. Tobias Börchers and Leon Hendrian both went 6-1 with their decks—both white, both with...

Vintage Format

Meet Mikael Linden

We didn't have time to sit down with Mikael Linden for an interview on Friday, when he won our Vintage main event for the second time, so I took hold of him today instead. Mikael started playing Magic around 1997 by buying 60 green cards from a friend. Another mutual...

Finals: Immanuel Kurz vs. Mikael Linden

After six rounds plus quarter- and semifinals, only two players were left to duke it out for the title and trophy of our Vintage main event: Sweden's Mikael Linden who had already won the MKM Series event in Prague last year playing the same {Oath of Druids} deck. And...

Quarterfinals: Jaroslava Stefankova vs. Arjen Ruiterkamp

After six rounds of Vintage, only eight players remained in the running for the fame and the fortune. In this quarterfinal, a truly international affair, Arjen Ruiterkamp from the Netherlands faced off against Jaroslava Stefankova from the Czech Republic. Stefankova...

All About That Mox

Vintage is a format with a very strict set of rules with regards to deck building. Obviously, a few cards aren't allowed at all and a lot are restricted to one copy per deck. However, looking at the succesful decks, one might get the impression that it's not so much a...

Vendor Feature: TokyoMTG

While our new tournament organizer JK Entertainment is also one of Europe's largest vendors, that doesn't mean we don't have a plethora of other vendors at all our MKMS events as well! If you are an interested dealer looking to join us at one or all of our future...

Talking to the TO

The Magic community, as you may be aware, is quite fond of abbreviations, from MTG itself to three letter set codes, from the PT to the GP, from various card, deck, player, and team monikers to the very EOT. In case you didn't know, TO simply means "Tournament...
