Fabian Friedrich had already finished in the playoffs in yesterday's Modern main event, but had been eliminated in the quarterfinal by Zombies. Today, in Standard, he chose to command the undead himself and was rewarded with the title of MKM Series London 2016 Standard Champion!

On his way through the Top 8, his third at the MKM Series, he first had to get past Silver-level pro Autumn Burchett playing Bant Company. According to Burchett that matchup was quite unwinnable for her. Friedrich had chosen his deck specifically to defeat Company, after all. Then he needed to beat Arturas Simaitis and his White-Black Control deck. Friedrich won both of these matches convincingly, 2-0.

At that point, due to a prize split among the semifinalists and subsequent drops, the trophy was Friedrich's to hoist. Congratulations!

Standard Metagame

The numbers are in! A total of 27 Standard players may not make for a very representative snapshot of the current Standard metagame, but the reality did align pretty well with our expectations. Meaning: green-white-blue decks based on Collected Company, either with Humans or with an assortment of various creatures, landed in first place, with Delirium, White-Black Control, Temur Emerge, and White Humans, either mono-colored or with a splash of red, trailing behind.

The biggest surprise may be the unusual popularity of Blue-Black Zombies. Although, with such small numbers, that might not mean much of course. We'll investigate. Meanwhile, within the “Other” category—all one-ofs—there were classics which had mostly fallen out of favor (Esper Dragons), strategies that never quite made it (White-Blue Spirits), and some more curious designs (Colorless Eldrazi).
