MKM Series Prague

Event Coverage of the MKM Series Prague

Day 1 of the MKM Series in Prague

More than 150 players travelled wide and far to the beautiful city of Prague to enroll in the first day of competition in the MKM Series. They spread out over three different events; 52 played in the Vintage and Standard events, respectively. Another 62 players instead focused on their preparation for Saturday's main event and played in the Legacy Trial.

The field in Legacy was rather diverse, with no deck being able to represent more than 17% of the field. Therefore, it came as no surprise that we saw 7 different decks in our Top 8 that were mostly made up of players that tried to take advantage of this chance and get their hands on one of the many MKM vouchers that we were handing out this weekend.

In the end, it was Sweden's Mikael Linden with his Oalcher deck to overcome the opposition and become Champion of the first of many events that we'll be playing this weekend. Make sure to check back regularly and also check out

Rasmus Sogaard’s incredible Budget deck

If you don't have access to all of the Power Nine cards, you are still eligible for a very special prize at the MKM Series: The award for the best budget deck. After 7 rounds of Swiss, Rasmus Søgaard ended up in 10th place and he didn't mind all that much - his deck...

Stellan von Versen – The Snake Charmer

One of the most interesting decks our coverage team spotted while going over the decklists for the Vintage event featured Mystic Snake, Hunting Grounds and Crystal Shard. The idea of the deck in a nutshell: Once Hunting Grounds is on the field, you can always put a...

The Czech Magic Scene

With three big tournaments all going on at roughly the same time, I couldn't help but wonder why a number of Magic enthusiasts were spending their time watching others play instead of getting their game on. It turned out that both Jaroslav Chmelik and Jaroslava...

Congratulations to Mikael Linden, the winner of the MKM Series Vintage main event!

Metagame Breakdown

The smaller event size made it somewhat harder to point to one particular deck and crown it the champion for this weekend's Vintage event. This claim can be further backed up by the fact that we saw 7 different archetypes among the final 8 competitors in the field!

It's hard to say what's been the best choice for the weekend. Considering that Mikael Linden described his winning list as a “pet deck”, you might as well bring your favorite deck to the next Vintage tournament and try your luck rather than studying metagame breakdowns all day.

Event Photos

Pairings for Round 1 of the Standard event were up!
We had 52 players signing up for Standard since quite a few players decided to enroll in the other events that were going on...
This entire row consisted of Standard players.
The venue was rather full and many Magicians opted to play Legacy or Vintage since we also offered tournaments in these formats.
The Standard tournament started first, so most of the players who did not enroll in it watched some games.
The tournament took place in the famous Staropramen brewery in Prague.
If you know one of these guys, don't hesitate to tag them on the photo.
The other end of the first row of players.
We saw a very diverse metagame, more information about that (and the full written coverage) can be found on http://www.magiccardmarket.eu/MKMSeries/main.php?tag=20&idt=3&idev=18
Our judges were hard at work, making sure that everyone was playing by the rules.
And now, the Vintage tournament was also underway!

The Top 8 were underway!
Another Top 8 match of the Standard tournament.
Here we see Jiri Vanek vs. Tobias Vlach.
The last Top 8 match of the Standard event pitted Klara Celikovska vs. Emanuele Giusti!
This is an overview of the venue late in the day.
We headed over to the Vintage Top 8 that took place at roughly the same time.
Sigi Hernandez had to go up against Mikael Linden.
This is Miquel Alcoriza, the top seated player after the Swiss portion!
Tomas Morla who also belonged to the group from Spain went up against Marcel Kaschapow.
Tomas was about to make his move!
An overview of the remaining Vintage Top 8 matches.
On the stage, we had our feature match between Jacob Sellman and Marc Invernizzi.
Jacob was about to put Marc on the spot!
Marc now had to dig deep and think hard about what to do next.
The venue started to clear out a little at this point in time.
A few players hung around to watch the feature match.
Our commentators were still hard at work despite it getting late.
