Mono red definitely was the most dominant deck of the tournament, of the weekend even! Granted, only 14 of the 76 Standard players chose the most recent incarnation of the classic mix of burn and hasty creatures, highlighted by Hazoret the Fervent. However, five of them made it to the Top 8, three to the Top 4.

But, time and time again in the playoffs, their zeal was thwarted by an unlikely challenger. Lukas Paugsch from the Slovak Republic had brought a blue-red Zombie/Fevered Visions/emerge concoction updated with Strategic Planning and Champion of Wits. The deck was undoubtedly cool and well-designed. Its only major flaw: an awful matchup against mono red, at least in theory.

In practice, Paugsch beat three red mages in a row to become the equally unexpected as well as deserved champion of Standard at MKM Series Prague 2017!

Metagame Breakdown

Elsewhere the new breed of mono-red aggressive decks reigned supreme. Here in Prague, at the 76 player Standard main event, the red decks only landed in third-place, at least as far as general popularity was concerned. Instead, Temur Energy and various versions of blue control decks with either red or black or both shared the top spot!
