The weekend's Modern action began on Friday with a massive 102-player Grand Trial, and it continued on Saturday with 296 players in the main event!

The decks on display suggested a definite shift in the metagame: a higher percentage of the field taken up by a few top strategies for one thing. Among them, Death's Shadow continued to be the most popular, while Tron surprised as the second most popular, even before Affinity. Decks based on Primeval Titan/Scapeshift and Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle also gained a bit of an additional following; some had even gained Hour of Promise with the recent release of Hour of Devastation.

Still Titanshift only made up less than four percent of the field. Yet it was the most succesful archetype of the tournament, placing two players into the Top 8, and taking Anders Thiesen all the way to victory!

Metagame Breakdown

296 players made our Modern main event the biggest single tournament of the weekend! And while the format once again showcased its vast variety of viable strategies, the breakdown of decks provided a good snapshot of the current metagame. Naturally, that meant Death's Shadow on top, with roughly two thirds of its pilots running Grixis, followed by Jund and an increasing number of Esper adherents.

The second most popular archetype was a little surprise: More than ten percent of the players employed the trio of Urza's Tower, Urza's Mine, and Urza's Power Plant, mainly to bust out colorless Eldrazi, with a few green Tron decks in between, and at least one blue. Affinity also gained in numbers after its recent string of tournament victories at the MKM Series. Conversely, midrange decks based in black and green—a little more than half of them Abzan, a little less than half Jund—fell in popularity, while White-Blue Control was another big winner.

Other strategies which showed up in at least somewhat notable numbers were Dredge and Faeries first of all, then Kiki-Chord, various Goryo's Vengeance builds, Elves, Lantern Control, White-Black Tokens, Humans, Soul Sisters, Mill with Fraying Sanity, and even a few Time Warping decks!
