The Vintage event at MKM Series Barcelona defied all expectations. 47 players signed up in total, making this one of the largest MKMS Vintage events in recent memory. Eleven players brought Mishra's Workshop, considered to be the dominant strategy after its spectacular showing at the recent North American Eternal Weekend; but only one of them made it to the playoffs, and then immediately fell in the quarters.

Instead, the Top 8 featured a sea of Islands, with Gifts Ungiven, Grixis Thieves, Blue-Red Pyromancer, Paradoxical Outcome/Monastery Mentor, and Oath of Druids all represented. In the end, Adria Romero Vilardell and his Young Pyromancer claimed the title and trophy.

In one respect, however, the tournament did follow expectations, as Rodrigo Togores reached the seventh MKMS Top 8 of his career, a feat rivaled by no other, and earned some valuable points in the race for the MKMS Power 8.

Metagame Breakdown

47 veterans of Vintage came together next to the larger Modern Event here in Barcelona. Coming off of Eternal Weekend 2017, we wondered if we would see Workshop decks abound at MKMS Barcelona or if we would see a similar spread to MKMS Hamburg, given the smaller Vintage pool.

Well—Mishra's Workshop did not disappoint as we got eleven Shop decks, a significant increase from the two present in Hamburg. Mentor/Young Pyromancer decks were also as prevalent as ever, with six players. Dredge edged out White Eldrazi and Oath of Druids in numbers with five players to Eldrazi's and Oath's three players each.

How Storm would pan out given the recent unbanning of Yawgmoth's Bargain had been a topic of great interest to us, especially considering the surprisingly limited affect it had on MKMS Hamburg. We did see one player here use three copies of the recently unrestricted Bargain instead of Paradoxical Outcome. Overall though, players here seemed to have decided that Bargain couldn't compete with Outcome as an enabler in Vintage Storm.
