Our last main event had come to an end and with it our time in Hamburg. 298 players came from all over Europe to test their mettle in Legacy and to fight for the prizes, the trophy, and the glory, but in the end only one man was left standing and it was Dennis Zens.

Zens was one of three players in the Legacy Top 8 for whom this was their second Top 8 of the weekend. Curiously, Oscar Basart had reached the playoffs in Vintage, Marc Lindrath had reached the quarterfinals in Standard, and Zens had Top 8'ed in Modern. With his victory now, he was poised to make a huge jump in the race for the MKMS Power 8.

As for Legacy: It seemed as if nothing had changed in the last couple of years. Although the metagame showed a plethora of Leovold, Emissary of Trest decks and the Top 8 was full of them too, the final could have taken place in 2013. It was the classic Sneak and Show versus Canadian Threshold. In fact, Zens only played one card in his 75 which was printed in recent years and finalist Marius Bender had only a handful himself in his sideboard.

Metagame Breakdown

With Legacy, there are always shenanigans going on. But surprisingly for maybe everyone, Modern had way more lists which did not belong to the first tier. Legacy seemed to have cooled down in the last years and especially now – with Miracles out of the picture – people settled on a popular deck.

That being said, of course the diversity was still huge. Not in our graphic were several WU Mentor, Canadian Thresh, Grixis Pyro, Infect, Merfolk and Dredge players, archetypes which were big contenders once upon a time and still have the potential to be.

The most popular decks showed that Legacy players wanted to have consistent, midrange decks above all else. With Stoneforge Mystic and Leovold, Emissary of Trest lists – sometimes having both – and the first combo or degenerate archetype coming in at number five, the speed of the format slowed down. Legacy has come a long way.
