Metagame Breakdown

A proud number of 34 players gathered right next to the Standard Main Event and the also very large Modern Trial to play the biggest Vintage MKM Main Event to date. Vintage had probably the biggest change to show for it as it was the only format that got touched in the most recent Banned & Restricted announcement. The spotlight was certainly on how the metagame would react to these changes so let's see what decks the competitors brought to the table.

In relation, Mentor decks became way less prevalent, as one would assume. Still, there were some players who refused to let their beloved monk go and played their Jeskai Control deck, replacing slots 2-4 with Young Pyromancer or even Delver in some cases. Some cut the white finisher completely and went with Standstill, a powerful choice considering the rest of the field. While the blue enchantment might not be the best against its green counterpart Oath of Druids, there were a lot of Eldrazi players – as usual – besides the other mainstays Dredge and Leovold where a nicely timed draw three could work very favorably.

The surprising part was that Storm still relied on Paradoxical Outcome. Maybe nobody wanted to put their trust in the newly unrestricted Yawgmoth's Bargain or some actually tested it and judged it not worthy enough – but there is always the next MKM Series event and the Vintage Super League may also have a word in that matter, so there is a chance that we see the sweet enchantment at the next tournament.
